Best Beaches in Vero Beach
1. Vero Beach
The small-town, slower-paced feel of old Florida still exists, but you might have to look outside of major metropolitan areas like Miami, Tampa and Jacksonville. In Vero Beach, a Treasure Coast jewel with sandy beaches and a breezy downtown, a relaxed atmosphere prevails.
Beachfront BlissThough Vero Beach is a beloved destination for snowbirds, honeymooning couples and families, you're not likely to find the beach overcrowded. Lifeguards watch over the water during the daytime, and restrooms, picnic tables and grills can be found at the town's three public beaches.
Sebastian Inlet State Park, located six miles north of Vero Beach, has a boardwalk from the parking lot to the beachfront, plus a fishing pier, a bait shop, trails and even camping spots. If you're into surfing, this is a prime spot. For boating, water-skiing, kayaking and fishing, head to the Indian River Lagoon.
Get a true taste of your subtropical surroundings at the McKee Botanical Garden, home to 100,00 native and tropical plants, plus a massive collection of waterlilies.
Shopping and DiningAfter getting your fill of the sun, head into town to admire some historical landmarks, such as the Vero Railroad Station, the Old Indian River County Courthouse and the Old Palmetto Hotel. Shopaholics should check out the Indian River Mall or the Vero Beach Outlets, as well as the Miracle Mile commercial section of town around 21st Street.
To savor your Florida beach experience, have dinner at one of the restaurants scattered along the waterfront or on Ocean Drive, which runs north and south along the barrier island. You'll have your choice of seafood dishes, classic American favorites, fine dining and international cuisine on this stretch.
